On a more light hearted note, cameos by actual artists are scattered within the novel to great effect: making small talk with David Bowie, meeting Brian Jones backstage, partying with Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin, taking acid with Jerry Garcia. Utopia Avenue is a big story comprised of hundreds of little gems—a great read!”

“Okay this book took me by storm, something I was not expecting in the slightest. At the start I was following along a meandering story about the individual lives of four random strangers who all end up in a band together. While their stories are intriguing, about half way though I found myself wondering what the rest of the book would entail... but that's when David Mitchell hooked me. I was just listening along and then bam! I couldn't stop. The second half interweaves the intimacies of the characters lives and the unpredictable struggles of living in general. What is Utopia? Is utopia somewhere full of perfection? Or is utopia being alive? Living a life of hardship and feeling but also joy and success. I am more likely to side with the second. What is Freedom? The choice to live? The attempt to live?”
