Set in Minnesota, Gone to Dust is the debut private-eye murder mystery from Emmy Award–winning Seinfeld writer Matt Goldman.

A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence?

Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, neighboring Edina Police Detective Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.

Suburban divorcée Maggie Somerville was found murdered in her bedroom, her body covered with the dust from hundreds of emptied vacuum cleaner bags, all potential DNA evidence obscured by the calculating killer.

Digging into Maggie’s cell-phone records, Nils finds that the most frequently called number belongs to a mysterious young woman whose true identity could shatter the Somerville family—but could she be guilty of murder?

After the FBI demands that Nils drop the case, Nils and Ellegaard are forced to take their investigation underground, where the case grows as murky as the contents of the vacuum cleaner bags. Is this a strange case of domestic violence or something with far-reaching, sinister implications?

Matt Goldman is an Emmy Award–winning television writer, also nominated for a Writer’s Guild Award for his work on Seinfeld. His first novel, Gone to Dust, was selected for the Texas Lariat Reading List and was chosen as the Twin Cities Reader’s best novel of 2017.

MacLeod Andrews is an actor, voice actor, and Earphones Award–winning audiobook narrator who earned the prestigious Audie Award for best narration in 2018. He has starred in a number of independent short and feature films and is a member of the Rising Phoenix Repertory Company in New York City.

Reviews

“A perfect blend of light touch and dark story.”

“Sharp wit, complex characters, and masterful plotting…Irreverent and insightful, private detective Nils Shapiro is sure to become a fan favorite.”

“A clever mystery that starts with a unique crime scene, mixes in a package of red herrings, and tops off the plot with Nils Shapiro, a private eye who is as interesting as his name.”

“A return to the classic detective novel I love. Matt Goldman brings the heat with a moody and wry Midwest elegy.”

“Andrews provides a multitude of character voices and moods to create a sensational performance…As protagonist Shapiro, Andrews’ accent is spot-on…among half a dozen equally well-voiced others…Andrews’ vocal performance delivers a rich and moving opportunity for listeners to feel Shap’s feelings, empathize with his frustrations and sympathies, and early follow his detective work.”

“Goldman…blends his storytelling with irreverent humor. His tough yet vulnerable PI, evocative Minneapolis setting, and clever plot, which features a distinctive crime scene and multiple red herrings, will engage and intrigue.”

“The resolution of the murder surprises and satisfies. Goldman’s experience as a stand-up comic, playwright, and TV writer show to advantage in this first novel’s wit, the story’s pace, and his hero’s charm.”

“With his wry, observant eye and quick wit, plus a pressing need to follow the truth into dark, uncharted places, Shap is a more optimistic version of Ross MacDonald’s Lew Archer. Readers will look forward to his next investigative adventure.”

“Goldman has written the perfect PI novel—smart, spare, sarcastic, and completely heartbreaking.”
