With the Fire on High

“I finished listening to this entire book in one night. It is so real and tender and fierce all at the same time. A teen mother struggling to be a good mom, a good kid, and make her own dreams come true at the same time. This book shows us how a seemingly dysfunctional family can conquer anything that is thrown at them to live happy lives.”

By Jennifer De Leon
Narrated by: Inés del Castillo
Length: 8 hours 33 minutes

Don't Ask Me Where I'm From

“Liliana, or Lilly as she is known at her new HS, is such an engaging teenager. Tough, smart, her willingness to learn. You'll love her just as I did reading about her attempts at bridging the gaps between Latinx, White, Black and Asian cultures here in an American High School. Ines del Castillo has the perfect voice. ”

The Night Swim

A Novel

By Megan Goldin
Narrated by: Bailey Carr, January LaVoy & Samantha Desz
Length: 9 hours 58 minutes

The Night Swim

“While Megan Goldin’s new novel The Night Swim is quite different from her first book, I think I liked this one even better. I am getting kind of tired of ‘psychological’ thrillers so was glad to find that Night Swim was actually a crime drama. I loved the way it was presented, a podcast by Rachel Krall about a rape case currently being tried in court and Rachel looking into a possible murder of a 16 yo girl 20 years earlier. Many of the same people that lived in the small NC town 20 years ago still live there. And, because of how small it is everyone knows everyone or at least knows something about everyone. So, it is no surprise that the two cases end up having some of the same people involved but how they end up being involved is a huge surprise. I really liked the character of Rachel Krall and hope that she may appear in a future book with another cold case or a case of guilty or not guilty. Listening to the audio version really made the podcast seem real and current.”

“Becky Chambers has built a dazzling and expansive science fiction universe and seems determined to introduce readers to every corner. The AI Sidra and young Jane provide swapping viewpoints between a bustling, multi-species city sprawling over a moon and a sterile factory among miles and miles of junkyard on a planet with extremely skewed priorities. Sidra's journey to understand who and what she really only becomes more poignant as you follow Jane struggle to escape the only home, the only planet, she has ever known. In the end, despite the fantastic setting and characters, Chambers manages to deliver a striking message about consciousness, survival, and family.”

Gideon the Ninth

Locked Tomb: Book #1

By Tamsyn Muir
Narrated by: Moira Quirk
Length: 16 hours 49 minutes

Gideon the Ninth

Gideon the Ninth is an epic science fantasy that if delivered into the hands of enough people will set the world on fire as it hasn’t been since The Hunger Games. Brilliance doesn’t come close to explaining Tamsyn Muir’s narrative where no single word is wasted or her engineering of a world with characters that end up belonging to you wholeheartedly even long after the last page. With fierce independence and hysterical wit, and laced with moments of pure heartbreaking tenderness and loyalty, Gideon and Harrow’s relationship simultaneously digs under your skin and tugs at your heartstrings. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.”

Once Upon a River

A Novel

By Diane Setterfield
Narrated by: Juliet Stevenson
Length: 16 hours 27 minutes

Once Upon a River

“Time to settle down for a story. It begins, as good stories should, with the rescue of a pair of strangers on a winter night. Though all is not as it seems in Diane Setterfield’s latest, as Once Upon a River quickly delves into a mystery. The young girl was dead when she was pulled from the river, but hours later she begins to breathe. As the story of her revival spreads, more than one member of the village feels mysteriously drawn to her. Could she be their missing child, estranged granddaughter, long-lost sister? Setterfield’s work is the closest an adult can come to settling down for story time, and Once Upon a River has the same magic, timeless, and cozy charm of a tale that has been told through the ages. Simply lovely.”

Talking to Strangers

What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know

By Malcolm Gladwell
Narrated by: Malcolm Gladwell
Length: 8 hours 42 minutes

Talking to Strangers

“This is an audio experience. Malcolm Gladwell talks about it a bit in the beginning. He chose to use audio recordings of interviews, etc., wherever available instead of just reading the quotes himself. There’s music spattered throughout. It’s kind of a book/podcast. It is not just a direct reading of the text. Also, Malcolm Gladwell has a soothing voice but covers some unsettling topics, so you can definitely listen to this one and not fall asleep. I won’t say I enjoyed this book, because how can you enjoy something that talks about all the unpleasant side effects of misinterpreting interactions with strangers? But it was incredibly interesting. We hear about what went wrong with Amanda Knox, the Brock Turner trial, and Sandra Bland, amidst many other examples. I love books like this that examine psychology through real life things. I definitely feel like I learned something from Talking to Strangers, and for me, that’s really the best way to judge a nonfiction title.”

Mythos

By author
Narrated by: Stephen Fry
Length: 15 hours 24 minutes

Mythos

“Stephen Fry has dusted off the Greek myths. Starting with the creation and going through all the infights, back-stabbings, and just plain stupid mistakes of the Greek pantheon, he breaths new life into these tales with his characteristic wry humor and witty asides. A great added feature of the video book is that Fry himself reads it, so sit back, turn on your LibroFM-playing device, close your eyes and be prepared to be entertained while learning or relearning the ins and outs of Greek mythology.”

Where the Crawdads Sing

By Delia Owens
Narrated by: Cassandra Campbell
Length: 12 hours 11 minutes

Where the Crawdads Sing

“Everyone that Kya has ever known has abandoned her. From the time that she was a young child she is left behind. After the student truancy officers track her down and get her to school the children laugh at her so she retreats to the only place that she feels normal - the marshland of North Carolina. She perseveres when she has every strike against her. She fends for herself and studies the natural surroundings of the marsh carefully. She paints and catalogs her collections, studies animal biology carefully, and becomes more in tune with nature than with the townspeople who call her "The Marsh Girl." Then one day the town's "golden boy" Chase Andrews ends up dead and Kya is the one that is suspected of killing him. The story that unfolds will draw you in - I was consumed with the story to the point where I could think about little else during the day because I had to know what happened next in the book. I laughed, I cried, I did fist pumps when things go well for Kya... this book infected me and I'm still having a tough time with the idea that the book is over. I'll carry these characters and this story with me for a long time.”
