Wintering

The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times

By Katherine May
Narrated by: Rebecca Lee
Length: 6 hours 53 minutes

Wintering

“Listening to Wintering during these COVID-19 times was a balm to this reader's soul. A beautiful meditation on the benefit of rest and healing during the inevitable and necessary barren times of our lives. I loved how Katherine May wove literature, mythology, and science together with personal memoir. This is one that I know I will return to again.”

We Run the Tides

A Novel

By Vendela Vida
Narrated by: Marin Ireland
Length: 6 hours 34 minutes

We Run the Tides

We Run the Tides is a coming-of-age story, written by Vendela Vida with two teenage girls at the heart of it. Eulabee and Maria Fabiola (Maria Fabiola is only referred to by both her names, never one, which isn’t the weirdest thing about the book) are in a lifelong duel. They’re both drawn to each other, Eulabee because she needs others to see how toxic Maria is even as she still craves her company, and Maria because she needs adoration from her peers. Their fallout leads to multiple kidnappings, being expelled from school, and a dead boyfriend (possibly). It’s a quiet book but it’s endlessly readable. The narrator is the perfect voice for Eulabee and her trying to make sense out of what she's seeing.”

The Removed

A Novel

By Brandon Hobson
Narrated by: Gary Farmer, Shaun Taylor-Corbett, DeLanna Studi, Katie Rich & Christopher Salazar
Length: 7 hours 6 minutes

The Removed

“In telling the story of a Native family in Oklahoma who lost a teenage son to a shooting, The Removed examines the power of inherited trauma and the strength of family to keep people together. The book is told in the voices of the various family members left after the death of their son/brother and explores the effects on their lives of their Cherokee ancestors who walked the Trail of Tears. Mixing several points of view along with Native myth, Hobson brings a powerful story to light where the reader really steps into the shoes of each character. The loss, sadness, and despair are palpable, but so are hope and healing, by the end. A truly beautiful book about something everyone should read more about.”

A Crooked Tree

A Novel

By Una Mannion
Narrated by: Sophie Amoss
Length: 8 hours 51 minutes

A Crooked Tree

A Crooked Tree is the delicately woven story of a single mother’s bad decision to kick one of her children out of the car miles from home, and how that decision affects an entire network of friends and neighbors throughout the summer. Gorgeously told and intricately written, this hardly seems the work of a debut novelist; Una Mannion will be one to watch, and A Crooked Tree already has me anticipating her next book!”

Narrated by: Machelle Williams
Length: 5 hours 31 minutes

If you enjoyed Sabrina & Corina, then you’ll love Milk Blood Heat.

“Hands down the best short story collection I've read to date. Not a dud in the bunch. Each story glows 10/10 on its own merit, yet paradoxically, each is that much greater when paired with its peers. If you want to know what it's like to read a miracle, pick up Dantiel W. Moniz's debut (that's right... A DEBUT!!!!!!) Milk, Blood, Heat. It's a book you'll slow down the audio when you listen to it to savor every last rich, syrupy drop.”

Length: 6 hours 35 minutes

If you enjoyed Her Body and Other Parties, then you’ll love Land of Big Numbers.

“ How can someone write about China? It’s a land of contradictions and multitudes seemingly impossible to tease apart. Te-ping Chen has managed to do just that with this slim and stunning short story collection. Each entry is a small glimpse into someone’s life; you will hunger for more. The book blends the real with the surreal to delicately touch on topics like technology, censorship, globalization, and conformity in surprising ways. The collection is like a perfect pearl: brilliant, gleaming and a little elusive.”

Compiled of short stories, essays, and poems, it is perfect for someone who is intimidated by lists of names and dates. Milk Fed

A Novel

By Melissa Broder
Narrated by: Melissa Broder
Length: 6 hours 48 minutes

Milk Fed

“This has it all: an eating disorder, mommy issues, frozen yogurt, sex, the spirit of Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, and lots more. The detail Broder brings to this story of appetite (that of spirituality, sensuality, and food) is magnificent. You feel like you're under the neon lights of the kosher Chinese Polynesian American restaurant in the middle of LA, rooting for Rachel as she starts feeding herself in more ways than one. Let me assure you that it's not for everyone, with a big trigger warning and explicit sex scenes, but it could be for you. And, as the narrator, Broder brings Rachel's voice to life in her breezy, LA cool-girl tone that slides over her captivating prose.”

A Little Devil in America

Notes in Praise of Black Performance

By Hanif Abdurraqib
Narrated by: JD Jackson
Length: 9 hours 38 minutes

A Little Devil in America

“Hanif Abdurraqib's exploration of Black performance in America is a cultural keystone that is chillingly relevant. Whether discussing the fact that a knowing look or advice on a route from a cashier is a form of a living Green Book that still exists because there are places Black people are not safe, to the origin of the card game spades or the difference between showing out or showing off, at the heart A Little Devil in America circles back to the fact that Black Americans have been forced to survive in places there were not welcome. The section on Black funerals pierced my heart. This book needs to be read, taught, underlined and discussed.”

Infinite Country

A Novel

By Patricia Engel
Narrated by: Inés del Castillo
Length: 4 hours 57 minutes

Infinite Country

“Starting with one of the best first sentences of a novel that I've ever read, Infinite Country is a moving portrait of the lengths a daughter will go to in an effort to reunite her family. Engel gives an intimate look into the challenges of a Colombian family that has been separated after emigrating to America. She also provides a unique view of what it's like to be an outsider in multiple different settings and her comparisons of the violence (and possible opportunities) in both countries are fascinating. With a very emotional ending, I highly recommend this title composed in an undoubtedly distinct voice.”
