Roly Carradine has found refuge in Cornwall, in the mellow stone house of his childhood. A broken marriage made Roly remove himself from his busy London life, and here in Cornwall he welcomes Kate, also seeking refuge from the grief of losing her husband, and young Daisy Quin, a dancer recovering from a back injury. Roly's son Nat, a garden designer with his own secret burden to bear, lives not far away and is plagued by the unsympathetic visits of his mother Monica, Roly's ex-wife. Roly, Kate, Daisy, and Nat all try to find resolution in the beauty and peace of the Cornish countryside.

Marcia Willett’s early life was devoted to the ballet, but her dreams of becoming a ballerina ended when she grew out of the classical proportions then required. She had always loved books, and a family crisis made her take up a new career as a novelist—a decision she has never regretted. She lives in a beautiful, wild part of Devon with her husband, where she loves to be visited by her son and his young family.

June Barrie has appeared in over eighty productions at the Bristol Old Vic, including playing Marina in Uncle Vanya, Mrs. Alving in Ghosts, Mrs. Conway in J. B. Priestley’s Time and the Conways, and the title roles in Driving Miss Daisy and Stevie. She has extensive experience on radio in plays and serials, while her television credits include Close Relations, Coasting, Seduction, and the BAFTA-nominated Dual Balls.

Reviews

“Warmhearted…Appealing, durable, human characters.

“June Barrie's gravelly, thoroughly English voice conveys character depth and is easy to listen to. She moves gracefully between the generations, distinguishing characters with slight adjustments in tone, accent, and energy.”

“With an agile mastery of multiple story lines and an uncanny knack for creating sympathetic characters, Willett winsomely creates congenial worlds that welcome loyal fans and new readers with ease.”
