At a time of bitter national polarization, there is a critical need for leaders who can help us better communicate with one another. In A Search for Common Ground, Rick Hess and Pedro Noguera, who have often fallen on opposing sides of the ideological aisle over the past couple of decades, candidly talk through their differences on some of the toughest issues in K–12 education today—from school choice to testing to diversity to privatization. They offer a sharp, honest debate that digs deep into their disagreements, enabling them to find a surprising amount of common ground along the way. Written as a series of back-and-forth exchanges, this engaging book illustrates a model of responsible, civil debate between those with substantial, principled differences. It is also a powerful meditation on where 21st-century school improvement can and should go next.

This book features: modeling dialogue; deliberate, sustained exchange; Left and Right politics; readable and conversational; and a unique approach.

Frederick M. Hess is director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. He pens Education Week's Rick Hess Straight Up blog, is a senior contributor to Forbes, and has written such influential works on school improvement as Spinning Wheels and Cage-Busting Leadership.

Pedro A. Noguera is the Emery Stoops and Joyce King Stoops Dean of the USC Rossier School of Education. He is coauthor of A Search for Common Ground: Conversations About the Toughest Questions in K-12.

Alex Knox is a classically trained actor, equally comfortable as a leading man and a comedic character performer. In addition to a long list of theater credits, he has appeared in commercials, hosted a web series ("Science Talks with Alex Knox"), and, as an improv performer, entertained thousands of guests at Southern California's theme parks. Alex wrote No Static at All, a one-man play about seeking spiritual enlightenment through the music of Steely Dan, and has performed the show to sold-out houses in New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles. He is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara and the Yale School of Drama.

Emmanuel Chumaceiro is a first generation Cuban-American and classically trained opera singer who has lent his rich baritone voice to stage productions throughout the Tri-state area, in addition to audiobooks and voice-over projects. He appeared in the US premiere of New Guidelines for Peaceful Times at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre, and the world opera premieres of Ulysses at Symphony Space and Gulliver's Travels at American Opera Project.
