In The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, a banker, Mr. Alexander Holder, makes a loan of 50,000 pounds to a socially prominent client, who leaves a beryl coronet - one of the most valuable public possessions in existence - as collateral. Feeling that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewelry in his personal safe at the bank, he takes it home with him. Awakened by a noise in the night, he is horrified to see his son playing with the coronet and apparently trying to bend it. Three beryls are now missing from it. In a panic, Mr. Holder travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British writer best known for his creation of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. In addition to being considered a father of detective fiction, he also wrote a series of science-fiction adventures starring the brilliant, daring, and comical Professor Challenger.

Stephen Thorne is a British actor and voice artist. He trained at RADA and has worked extensively in film, television, stage, and radio. His credits include roles on Doctor Who and voicing Aslan in the animated version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Treebeard in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Renowned as a narrator, he has recorded over three-hundred audiobooks and has won a Talkies Award and several Earphones Awards.
