In The Five Orange Pips, a young Sussex gentleman named John Openshaw tells the strange story of his uncle Elias Openshaw, who came back to England after living in the United States as a planter in Florida and serving as a colonel in the Confederate Army. His uncle begins receiving threatening letters inscribed KKK and including five orange pips. He is killed shortly thereafter. The job of unraveling this sordid transatlantic mystery falls to Holmes and his trusty companion Dr. Watson. The fifth of the twelve stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, this is also one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British writer best known for his creation of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. In addition to being considered a father of detective fiction, he also wrote a series of science-fiction adventures starring the brilliant, daring, and comical Professor Challenger.

Stephen Thorne is a British actor and voice artist. He trained at RADA and has worked extensively in film, television, stage, and radio. His credits include roles on Doctor Who and voicing Aslan in the animated version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Treebeard in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Renowned as a narrator, he has recorded over three-hundred audiobooks and has won a Talkies Award and several Earphones Awards.
