Meet the inspirational students: This narrative tells the story of seven women and one man at the heart of a sit-in protesting decreased enrollment and hiring of African Americans at Swarthmore College and demanding a Black Studies curriculum. The book, written by the former students themselves, also includes autobiographical chapters, providing a unique cross-sectional view into the lives of young people during the Civil Rights era.

Correcting media representation: For years the media and some in the school community portrayed the peaceful protest in a negative light—this collective narrative provides a very necessary and overdue retelling of the revolution that took place at Swarthmore College in 1969. The group of eight student protestors have only recently begun to receive credit for the school's greater inclusiveness, as well as the influence their actions had on universities around the country.

Stories that inspire change: This book chronicles the historical eight-day sit-in at Swarthmore College, and the authors also include untold stories about their family backgrounds and their experiences as student activists. They share how friendships, out-of-the-box alliances, and a commitment to moral integrity strengthened them to push through and remain resilient in the face of adversity.

Joyce Frisby Baynes is a retired superintendent (Dunellen, New Jersey, and Englewood, New Jersey).

Aundrea White Kelley earned her BA in sociology and anthropology from Swarthmore. After working in the corporate and non-profit sectors she earned an MBA and an MS in public policy, both from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Her public service career focused on collaborative initiatives to resolve education policy challenges. At the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, she held a succession of impactful positions, including commissioner (acting). Quincy College recruited her as chief academic officer and after successfully leading its effort to secure all accreditations, she retired. Aundrea remains passionate about civic engagement and public policy as tools for justice.

Marilyn Allman Maye is associate professor of educational leadership at New Jersey City University.

Myra E. Rose is a medical doctor specializing in the care of patients with cancer and blood diseases (hematology-oncology). She spent most of her professional life at the Morehouse School of Medicine, where she helped build and lead the department of internal medicine. She has served as an attending physician, medical student clerkship director, internal medicine residency program director, hospice medical director, and chair of medicine at Morehouse. Medical education and the provision of quality medical care to the underserved has always been her passion. Writing for professional and personal reasons throughout her life has provided an outlet for the stress of medical practice and leadership responsibilities. Though recently retired she continues to practice hematology-oncology and provide care to underserved patients while she educates students and residents. Myra loves to travel and lives in Atlanta with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Bridget Van Gronigen Warren (retired) was professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Panama's Faculty of Medicine and a microbiologist in the Panama Canal Authority.

Machelle Williams has crafted an easy storytelling style from twenty-three years as a corporate trainer and keynote diversity speaker. Since 2016 she has successfully produced over twenty-eight audiobook projects. Machelle's voice is nuanced, ranging from soft and soothing to dramatic and smoky. She specializes in mysteries and thrillers; her bespoke repertoire also includes cozy mysteries and nonfiction, as well as titles in the religious, urban, and noire genres. When you need a narrator to take your listener to the edge of their seat and their breath away, trust the telling to Machelle.

When he was seven, David Sadzin's first grade teacher gave him a paragraph to read out loud. She interrupted him halfway to proclaim him "The Ringmaster" in his class's musical extravaganza about the circus. He's been using his voice to get out of trouble ever since. After a few intense years on New York's stages, performing traditional and experimental theater, improv, and sketch comedy, he's now settled comfortably in front of the mic in his home studio in Brooklyn.
